Lights, Camera, Action!

Good morning Blog Readers!

It’s been another busy week here at Broadcasting House – we can’t quite believe we’re welcoming another new month already, but fingers crossed that means summer is on its way!

We’re constantly keeping an eye and an ear out for all things social media; we like to stay ahead of the game and bring you the latest trends! The hot topic in the office this month is VIDEO, and how it can benefit your marketing campaign.  But what’s so new about video we hear you cry?

Gone are the days where visual imagery meant two black and white television channels which were switched off for the night.  Last year YouTube celebrated their 10th birthday, and now a staggering 4 billion videos are watched online every day.  With this mind blowing statistic, you really can’t afford to not get involved.

A recent survey found that Facebook users are 39% more likely to share, 36% more likely to comment, and 56% more likely to “like” an online video over a text only article.  We’ve all heard the saying “A picture is worth a thousand words”; well if this is the case then video must be worth ten thousand!

Prior to the smart phone era, you would have needed extensive and costly camera equipment, but now more than ever it’s never been easier to become an internet sensation with the click of a few buttons and a forward facing camera.  You can literally, “broadcast yourself”, as YouTube so aptly put it.

It is said that a human being has the attention span of just 7 seconds.  So what can we take from this shocking statistic? The 21st Century socialite leads a busy life, his attention span is brief, he gets news updates, football scores, and chats with friends instantaneously.  He doesn’t have the patience to hang around.  Therefore content needs to be short and sweet.  With the launch of Facebook’s Autoplay feature, the first few seconds are crucial if you’re going to engage with your audience.

So if statistics alone aren’t enough to convince you, we’ve put together some ideas of what sort of content you could be sharing or creating…

  1. Show-how

Does what it says on the tin.  Show-how videos are visual instruction manuals.  Whether they talk you through a healthy recipe, how to make something crafty, or how to fix that leaking tap. Short, and to the point.

  1. Inspire, excite, motivate

Something that’s going to stick in your consumers minds.  Something that is going to drive them to connect with your business.  If you can connect with your customers on a personal level, this is the first step to them actually purchasing your product or service.

  1. Humour, entertain

We mustn’t forget social media is supposed to be, well, social! Over 220 million viewers tuned in to watch a panda baby sneeze on YouTube. No, we’re not even joking.  220 million! Now we’re not saying you need to run to your nearest zoo, but humour in general always goes down well.  If you’re seen to be fun and friendly, you’re more likely to engage with your customers.

  1. Showcase products / events

Again, fairly self explanatory; if you have a brand new car in the showroom, a new range of furniture just in, or are holding a fundraising event at the weekend, a short video to showcase what you are offering always go down a treat!

  1. Ignite, provoke, impact

Topical stories relevant to your business or community – people are more likely to engage with you if you are sharing content that directly impacts them.  Spark debate, discussion and emotions within your audience.

But if you’re feeling a bit camera shy and don’t fancy yourself as the next George Clooney, this is where we can step in!  SMART Visual Design and SMART Social brings together video and social media enhanced by the power of your radio advertising, all in one simple and highly cost effective package.
